Leading—and Filming!—the Blue Angels (ep. 191)
Retired #usnavy Captain Greg "Rug Dance" Wooldridge knows a thing or two about the #blueangels because he led them a time or two...actually THREE times, to be exact. That was in the 90s.
Back then, Rug Dance was involved in the documentary 'Around the World at the Speed of Sound' and today he is one of the creative geniuses behind the 2024 Blue Angels iMax feature.

Why we need TOPGUN Adversaries with "Farley" (ep. 180)
Hey Shoes! I was there in Key West with you guys. Ya'll gave my father one helluva ceremony and inducted him into the squadron. He always remembered that very fondly. A little while after that ceremony a bunch of you guys ripped my shirt off and spray painted the skull and crossbones on me with the squadron stencil. I thought that was the coolest shit in the world. Still got the official shirt with all of the patches. Thanks for all of the fun.
Thanks for your response. We are going to disagree here. It's not a discussion. That would imply equal comments from both of you. It's an interview. You are featuring a guest and your title suggests we are going to hear from him about being a Blue Angel leader. Its not about you....or shouldn't be. Interrogation is too strong a word. Question and answer session is a better characterization. Ask a question. Get out of the way. Ask a question. Get out of the way. I will say you got better as the interview progressed. Yes guests can go off the rails with their answers and then you do have to reel them in. That goes with being a skilled interviewer. I will also disagree you can be too succinct with questions. A direct question usually results in a more direct answer even if the quetion is open ended. Anyway he was a great guest and I enjoyed his comments. We can agree to disagree and I'll be reading more of your interviews. All the best.
You got it. Thanks 👍
Hey Jell-o, open to some constructive critique? Very interesting interview.....but you do what too many interviewers do whether it's sports, politics, aviation or other wise. You take waaaay to many words to ask a simple question. Example....you asked Duster "take me through a typical week of the blue angel boss". Good question and you should have just shut up at that point. Instead you launch into about 4-5 different variations of the same question....dragging it out blah blah blah in some form trying to anticipate the answer yourself. I was yelling at the screen "Jell-o shut up and let the man answer the question!!! Keep questions to your guests simple and to the point. "Duster tell us about a typical week in the life of the Blue Angel boos". Done... finished... be quiet and listen to the answer. Then follow up if need be. It's annoying to listeners when you drag out your questions so long.
I appreciate the feedback. The challenge with your suggestion is instead of a discussion it ends up being an interrogation. Humans are not efficient speakers, myself included. Too verbose is not great, I agree, but neither is too succinct.
BLAH BLAH BLAH...WHERES THE FLIGHT FOOTAGE FOOL...
Just saw this in IMAX. It was the best IMAX experience I have ever had. Don’t miss this in IMAX. It will exceed your expectations. I promise!
Thank you for getting the word out! Saw at at imax today. The filming was peerless the story was perfect. This is without question the FINEST aviation film in history! Unbelievable shots! The solo's high aoa was a study in aerodynamics frankly all of the flying scenes shot from the squirrel beggar belief. Thank you for sure beautiful and honest work!
How come this episode, 145, was not filmed??
Because we did not begin filming episodes until 156.
@@FighterPilotPodcast Brian and I graduated from Riddle the same year. We met through a mutual friend Chris Butler.

So great…Loved to watch it in Imax …But besides we have multiple imax theaters here in the Netherlands …..they are not showing it…so sad !!! So for me it will be amazon . Loved the podcast…keep it going
Thanks. This is our seventh year of keeping it going--hopefully a couple more at least!
Saw it last night. When the formation was less than 12 inches, WOW! Most movies don't need to be in 3D, but if only they shot it in 3D...
Saw the documentary in the theater last night and it was spectacular! Absolutely amazing cinematography and audio work, great soundtrack, and awesome storytelling following outgoing and incoming team members. Loved the look behind the blue curtain into everything the whole organization puts into their mission! Bravo!
Also just returned from the Imax... Wow! Superb footage and great story. Did I miss Rugdance's callsign being put up on screen...? If they have a callsign of the world's worst genocidal dictators on screen (stalin), surely Rugdance is insignificant.😁
Don't recall, perhaps they were only showing callsigns of the current team members.
A rug dance is what you do when you screw up and have to see the boss. "Well, uh you see skipper, at the time... and then.... well um..." the better the story the more innovative the punishment.
Just saw it! Totally worth it..but wish it was shown in IMAX 70MM
👍great stuff. As soon as I saw the preview about this film, I AM THERE , I will see it in IMAX. I wish it would stay longer than one week in the theaters. So more people get the chance to see it. Thanks,
He doesn’t even know he’s a bada** as humble as he seems. What a pilots dream.
Shoes Mullin... Fox Farrell, and the "..on the Deck..." Shot. VF-84 Jolly Rogers. Legendary. I agree with Shoes... Without the hype about the F-14 from Final Countdown, there is probably no 1984 Top Gun Film...
In all seriousness I watched this and loved every minute of it. Boss Wooldridge is the quintessential good guy and motivator. Even when he admits he could've done some things better in life it is for our benefit as listeners. Thank you for your service Boss and glad you were there!
He was fabulous
Nice beard Vincent!!! And great episode too.
Looking forward to seeing the IMAX movie today!
Come back and let us know how you liked it.
@@FighterPilotPodcast it was great! Guest appearance by Gil Rud also! Perfect documentary!

wow... great peek behind the curtain! thanks!
watched it last night! It was awesome!!!
Great interview! Thanks!
Great interview. My question is, a few years back a series of videos were posted on FB about a Year in the Life of the Blue Angels, which I enjoyed very much. Aside from being on IMAX, how does the new documentary differ from the previous?
That was very entertaining. Thanks. If only we had an IMAX theater.
Bummer.
I see no flaws with this plane, but do see them with F-15, and MiG-25.
The new type of cargo bay should have been easier, but was harder. Most often sticking to proven and classical technology is best.
Saw the Blue Angels last week at MCAS Cherry Point. They were amazing as always!!
This is so intense. After listening to this incredible guest, was on fire to get to IMAX to see the movie ASAP this week. But there is a problem. The only MAX in all of Silicon Valley, California is MAX DISAPPOINTMENT‼️ Trying to locate the film on an IMAX what has turned out to be so amazing is there is only ONE (1) IMAX theater in the entire San Francisco Bay Area population 8.5 Million that is showing this film. And it’s over by Oakland offramp where nobody wants to go anymore due to broad daylight crime. The other San Francisco Bay Area IMAX theaters THREE (3) available are all showing Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Now isn’t that profound‼️ Prrhaps feeling the pinch of a certain political persuasion in our region.
I really enjoyed this particular podcast. I was a crew chief on the Caribou from the 536th Squadron (KL - yellow taIls) in 1971. I spent nine months at Bien Hoa, although my home base was Cam Ranh Bay. I attended the Caribou reunion in Orlando this past year. It was a great get-together.
So glad you posted this video. I had no idea this documentary was coming out. As soon as I say it, I bought tickets to take my 9yr. old son to see it in IMAX tomorrow! He is beyond excited!
Saw it this afternoon. Absolutely amazing! Better than Top Gun.
Fantastic interview! I remember watching the original documentary with Dennis Quaid many many years ago, back then that was fascinating as well to see the inner workings of the Blues organization. I am looking up imax locations now!
I saw it in the theater today (Friday, 5/17). Please... do NOT wait for this come to Prime Video. Seeing it on an IMAX screen often makes the plane look life-sized. This should win an award for cinematography. Its a great look at the entire team, from the pilots that get all the ooohs and aaahs to the crews that enable the planes to get off the ground. The only thing missing was the smell of jet exhaust.
I just saw it today and couldn’t agree more. Definitely worthy of cinematography awards and the discussion with the aviators and support crew was excellent. Could be nominated for best documentary. It will be going to Amazon Prime but I couldn’t agree more about watching it on IMAX. J.J. Abrams also was able to film the first time a 360 degree diamond formation being completed by the Blue Angels.
Went to see it a few hours ago. Absolutely stellar! Will probably watch it more than once while it’s in IMAX
I can't wait to see this. It will be a Mesmerising Ride whilst in the Comfort of a Theatre. It just Reinforces my Regard & Respect I have for these People who keep us so Entertained at Air Shows no matter where you you come from. I'm from Australia & I have seen these Guys Do their thing & it is just amazing stuff. Brilliant Guys. Regards
Just got back from seeing the movie. WOW was that ever amazing in IMAX!
Going in a couple hours!
Great interview. Looking forward to seeing this documentary. ✈️
Does anyone know if you can find footage of all the blue angles even the f8f bear cat? Same with the thunderbirds
Called it! I must be clairvoyant 😉
Where canI fly with these? are they avai to public?
No.

Bio. Im sorry man. But i cant think of ANYTHING other than the zone 5 Campaign when i hear you start talking. absolutely perfect campaign to release for a flight sim. i learned so much whilst also testing my abilities
Great episode! Always enjoyed watching from Potters Road in the 1980's the F-14s and A-6s do FCLP on runway 14L. The Kfir and F16N from VF-43 was always a treat to see. Love listening to naval aviators talk about their time with the Kfir. Cheers.
I miss watching the Tomcats fly
Well never do the job of SAR like the A-10
Love this!
Thanks!
I remember being in the AFJROTC and getting to visit Beale and see the SR-71s close up. And by close up, we got to look in the cockpit, red security panels in place of course. We got to see the pilots suiting up, and saw the simulator, but not as close as the planes themselves. I believe that was during the Beale Airshow in 1978.

This is definitely one of my favorites from this great show. Bought the book right after!
As a soldier who wants to start on his flight packet. Would it be ideal to focus on the asvab and the sift or does it matter what order to go in?
